The Results Are In: 100% of SGWS Families Would Recommend Spring Garden to Their Friends!
This past summer, we conducted a parent survey. This survey is one way for the faculty and administration to hear parents’ perspective about the education we provide. We will continue this tradition annually and hope you will use this opportunity to share your opinions.
While we had enough responses to the parent survey that we can analyze school-wide data with confidence, the responses per grade were low enough that we have to take grade-specific responses with a grain of salt. All this to say, please take time to respond to the survey when it comes out again in the spring — it can be an extremely effective way to make your voice heard.

Service Hours Summaries
Last week, each SGWS family received a sheet in their mailbox detailing their Service Contract Hours recorded to date. We emphasize “recorded” because it is clear that many of you are not recording all — or any — of the hours you have served! It is extremely important that you record all your service hours as soon as possible after they are completed so that, at any given time, we can report to our donors and constituents the number of hours our community has served.
We would also like to take the opportunity to remind you that your contract requires you to perform a minimum of 20% of your required service hours (six hours, for most families) on work days — even if your service extends beyond the required 30 total hours. The dates for winter/spring 2014 work days will be released soon.
Finally, we would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to the families who have already completed their service hours, including work day hours. But even when your hours are complete, you are always welcome to join us in our efforts to lovingly care for our building, our grounds, and our community!
News from Mr. Grimes and the Garden …
Fragrant holiday paperwhites are available for pre-order beginningWednesday, November 20. This year I started them a bit later, so they should begin to bloom at the end of December and continue to do so throughout the holiday season. There are three bulbs per pot, and we are selling them for $9.00 per pot. Order forms will be available near the parent mailboxes, and cash, check, or MCA are welcome forms of payment.
Thanksgiving Herb Sale!
Organically grown parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme will be available for $3.00 per ounce — this is a dollar less than most box supermarket stores. Order forms will be available starting Wednesday, November 20, outside the parent mailboxes, and herbs can be picked up after school Monday and Tuesday, November 26 and 27. Those of you who purchased last year will remember that the sage kept for up to 90 days after delivery in the refrigerator. These delicious herbs sell fast, so place your orders right away!
School Store News
Get ready for the holidays and support SGWS by shopping at the School Store!
We are proud to announce that we now have ornaments made by Marie Lim, needle felting kits made by Jennell Woodard, whimsical pictures by Miss Tori, and many other beautiful hand-made items created by members of the SGWS community.
If you are interested in ordering a Chicago Waldorf School 2014 Wall Calendar, please add your name to the list in the school store. This 12-month calendar features engaging art by Waldorf students from throughout North America and includes an introduction to the painting curriculum through the grades. The cost is $16.00 each, and each purchase helps promote Waldorf education.
Come check out our three clearance tables, stacked high with deeply discounted toys, games, yarn, and much more. We need to make room for the new inventory that is arriving daily!
Volunteers Needed for the Advent Spiral
We will be seeking volunteers to help lay the spiral, carve the apples used for candle holders, and sing during this beautiful, solemn event, which will be held on Monday and Tuesday, December 2 and 3. Please look for sign-up sheets posted outside the office or email Julie Carpenter if you are interested in helping.
