Farms and Food in the Grade 3 Curriculum

Students in their ninth year are beginning to question the world around them. They wonder where things come from and how they are made. In order to meet our Grade 3 students in a developmentally appropriate way, we study farming and cooking as a part of the curriculum.

Our field trip to Graf Growers last week allowed us opportunities to see how a large-scale farm operates and to learn about one of their largest crops: pumpkins. We learned how the pie pumpkins we received are often used to make pumpkin pie, which we have been working on this week. In the process of creating enough pumpkin pies so that each student has one to take home, we have also been able to practice math skills and begin to discover liquid and dry measurement.

Children’s Festival and Artists Market

It’s coming soon! Many hands make light work, and this is a really fun day to get your service hours. We will have sign-up sheets outside Amy Hecky’s office for all the different volunteer opportunities by Friday, November 1. Some work can be done at home before the festival, and it takes many volunteers on the day of the festival — 30 volunteers per hour! Please join the fun and sign up ASAP to help.

You’ll also find fliers for the festival in your mailbox this week. Please post them around town so we can share our biggest festival with the greater community. If you need more fliers, please see Amy Hecky and she’ll give you whatever you need!

Thank you in advance for your support of this magical day!

Halloween Festival Reminders

– The Halloween Festival will be from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 31.

– The Pumpkin Walk will be from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. — please plan to arrive by 7:00.

– We are still looking for volunteers to serve cider, tend the bonfire, and clean up after the Festival. Please sign up on the sheet posted on the main office door.

– For complete details, please refer to the flier that was placed in mailboxes last week or click here to download a copy.

Early Childhood Martinmas Lantern Walk

The Early Childhood classes — Miss Kathy, Miss Olga, and Miss Julie — will celebrate Martinmas with a lantern walk during the school day on Friday, November 8. The three classes will walk down to the creek together during their outdoor playtime, to sing songs and leave seeds and crumbs for the forest animals. This is a simple celebration, intended to both observe the changing of the seasons and inspire generosity of spirit.

Auction Planning Meeting October 31

cometogetherlogocropThe Auction Kick-Off Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 31st at 9:00 am in the School Store.  If you are willing to join in the fun and help us make this our most exciting event yet, please plan on attending this meeting.  If you would like to help but are not able to make it to the meeting, please contact the Auction Committee Chair, Sandy Conley, at

Remember that your effort assisting with the Auction counts toward your service hours, so don’t be shy about getting involved.

Together, we can continue to grow and make this exceptional educational opportunity available for our children, as well as share it with children of our future.  We look forward to your participation in this event!

Thank You, Monster Dash Participants!
