Waldorf Education and the Relationship Between Mind and Movement

The Spring Garden community is invited to a presentation and discussion on Waldorf Education and the relationship between mind and movement on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. here at SGWS. The event is free, and childcare will be provided free of charge, courtesy of the SGWS Parent Council.
Mary Jo has been teaching children and guiding teachers in Waldorf education for over 30 years. She is a founding member of the Association for a Healing Education and has directed their Education Support Program since the mid-1980s. She has initiated publications and workshops to support schools and has been a guest speaker on the subject of Educational Support in many conferences and workshops.

This event is sponsored by the Parent Council. For more information, contact Diane Miskinis at dmiskinis@sgws.org or (330) 665-3506.

School Picture Retake Day October 3rd

Photos taken last week have been posted and are ready to view. To view and order photos:

Once you are in, there is a rollover button in the top left corner called “categories” — this is where each grade’s photos can be found. Touch-ups and edits are done only by request and are generally free of charge. All packages include a class photo — if you order a package, you will automatically get a regular class photo with your order. “Silly” class photos are available for purchase.

Retake day is Thursday, October 3. If you wish to have your child’s picture retaken, please let the office know by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2. This will allow us to coordinate with teachers effectively.

The ordering deadline is Sunday, October 7.  After October 7, photos will still be available, but prices will increase and you may have to pay to have photos shipped to your home. Photos ordered by October 7 will be delivered to the school approximately two weeks after the deadline.

Teacher Evaluation Surveys Coming Soon

Every year, a third of the faculty, plus any new teachers, are evaluated using observation, self-evaluation, and parent feedback. This year, some teachers will be evaluated in the fall and others in the spring. In the coming weeks, you may receive a link to a survey asking you to evaluate the performance of your child’s teacher or one of our subject teachers. Please take a few moments to thoughtfully, thoroughly, and promptly complete the evaluation surveys — your feedback is important!

The theme for this year is “Peace Begins with One Head, One Heart, and One Hand.” This event brings over 600 attendees to SGWS for a magical blend of creative activities, enchanted attractions, great food, amazing entertainment, and fabulous shopping. We hope you can join us!

Every class is involved, through their parents, in supporting this Festival. Watch for more information over the next few weeks. Currently we are accepting vendor applications for the Artists’ Market. We request that all items sold at the Artists’ Market are handmade. Natural materials/fibers and old-fashioned craftsmanship are preferred. Thankful Thoughts

We would like to thank JoAnne Kapitan for taking the initiative to beautify the school entrances with gorgeous mums and seasonal plants, which she has artfully arranged in planters and beds. Please take time to notice and enjoy them while you are here. Thank you, JoAnne!

School Store News

Stop in and check out our colorful new items from Sarah’s Silks. Playsilks are a basic ingredient for children’s imaginative play. They can be used to create elaborate costumes, build forts, create landscapes for animals and water for boats, and much more. The light, flowing silk is hand-hemmed and dyed with non-toxic dyes. We also carry reversible silk crowns adorned with jewels, play-friendly soft swords, silk wings for dress-up play, and silk parachutes that are easy to throw and quick-opening.

Join the Festivals Committee!

Are you a party person and looking for an outlet for your talents? Consider joining the Festivals Committee at Spring Garden. The Festivals Committee helps school-celebrated events, such as Advent, St. Nicholas Day, and May Day, go smoothly. If you are interested, please email Julie Carpenter atjcarpenter@sgws.org.

SGWS Lending Library

The Lending Library, located inside the School Store, has expanded due to the receipt of many donations over the summer. Most books and magazines have a Waldorf theme. Please stop in and browse! If you find an item you would like to borrow, simply complete the card in the back pocket and then place it in the white check-out box. Upon returning the item, please return the card to the pocket.
